The appropriation of Balkanisation

Dušan Stojičević, Chair of the Board of Governors of the Serbian National Internet Domain Registry Foundation (RNIDS), wrote a blog‑post for the Ukrainian Network Information Centre (UANIC) website. The entire blog‑post is available here.   Every time I hear the term “Balkanisation of the Internet” I have to remind myself what they mean. As a Balkan man, and a Serb, old enough to have lived through the wars in the former Yugoslavia, I realise they are talking about the break‑up of the Internet. This (mis)appropriation of the word “Balkanisation, whereby the former Yugoslavia is identified with the Balkan region in its entirety, bundling the Greeks, Bulgarians, Romanians and other south‑eastern peoples into the same negative category and in doing so seeking to depict the Internet as being pulled apart by the launch of IDN domains, was one more reason for me to address these issues surrounding IDNs. And I am sure of one thing ‑ that this usage of the word is wrong, and what we are seeing is not the break‑up of the Internet but a natural step in its development. The more the merrier With its origins in the US, it is no surprise that the entire computer and IT industry is based on the English language...

Pitajte.rs ‑ RNIDS educational program about everything important for online presence

Serbian National Internet Domain Registry (RNIDS) organised a one day educational event called “Pitajte.rs” (Ask.rs) on May 2nd 2015, within the “Nova Energija” (New Energy) conference. The program was designed to directly connect the audience with 12 Serbian Internet experts by providing the opportunity for people to ask specific questions, and instantly receive answers and professional advices. Each of the experts gave a short lecture and answered questions within these 4 topics:   • How to start your Internet business? • How to build your brand online? • How to create online content? • How to advertise on the Internet? A lot of people who have recently started working on their online presence, doesn’t have the opportunity to receive any kind of free professional support in acquiring knowledge and good practices within their scope of work. Our idea was to become a bridge that connects the Internet beginners with the professionals in a stimulating and creative environment, where they are comfortable to ask questions and receive support in overcoming a certain business challenge.  Around 100 attendees directly participated in discussions together with the people who asked questions via pitajte.rs / питајте.срб website, Facebook and Twitter. Having that the conference room was too small to receive all of the interested audience, people brought additional seats, stood...

Cyber‑threats call for cyber‑knowledge

On 31st March, the Serbian National Internet Domain Name Registry (RNIDS), together with the FONIS Association of Students of Information Science, organised a talk titled Cyber Security ‑ Everywhere for Everyone at the Belgrade Faculty of Organisational Sciences. Around 150 students and other interested members of the public had a chance to hear about the different ways of staying safe on the Internet and what the greatest present‑day online threats are. “The biggest problem we face today is that the resources needed to do serious damage to a website or company are very small, while the resources required for their defence are huge,” said Boško Radivojević, director of the company Mainstream. He reminded the audience that there were currently some 10 billion devices connected to the Internet and that by 2020 there would be 50 billion, representing an increased risk of cyber attack. In Serbia there are currently 2.85 million Internet users, of whom 1.16 million sell or make purchases via this global network, while only a third of Internet users from Serbia keep their online content on servers in this country. DIDS 2015 Internet conference held in Belgrade

More than 300 visitors took part in this year’s Serbian Internet Domains Day (DIDS 2015), held at the Metropol hotel in Belgrade and organised by the Serbian National Internet Domain Registry Foundation (RNIDS). DIDS 2015 was the sixth annual conference on the development of the Internet globally and in the Serbian .rs and .срб domain spaces, held this year under the slogan “Which Internet Film are you in?”. The all‑day programme, divided as always into three blocks, saw IT professionals from all sectors of the economy, Internet providers and accredited registrars come together with other local Internet users to hear the experiences of some thirty conference speakers from home and abroad. In the first block titled “Masters of the Internet” the topic of discussion was the forthcoming changes to the global governance of the Internet. Without proper and impartial translation of domains into IP addresses and their fair allocation to billions of connected devices, the Internet would become fragmented. As of September, oversight of these tasks is due to be transferred from the US government to “all of us”,  that is to the global Internet community, and a multistakeholder model of Internet governance established. “According to this model, ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned...
