Keynotes that will mark Serbian Internet Domain Day Conference (DIDS2023)

The traditional Serbian Internet Domain Day (DIDS2023) is being held on March 7, 2023, and organized by The Serbian National Internet Domain Registry Foundation (RNIDS). The selected venue is Vlada Divljan Culture Center in Belgrade, Serbia. The slogan of the DIDS2023 conference is Think Digital. Two conference keynotes will undoubtedly inspire the participants to switch their minds to the innovation mode. The task of putting the event on the fast track right from the beginning has been given to Dave Birss. Dave is a Britton obsessed with innovation. Actually, so obsessed that he could not stay in the creative industry. That is why he became the master of his own destiny. Since 2010, he has been a creative director, musician, poet, writer, speaker, lecturer, director and presenter of documentaries, and journalist. As he says, he is a bit uncomfortable when describing what he does for a living because he is not sure about it either. Birss is the author of several best‑selling books. The latest one ‑ Friction: Adding Value By Making People Work is about leveraging good friction to generate adrenaline, dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins to drive increased engagement, meaning, belonging, rapport, assurance, competence, and exclusivity. During his keynote, Dave Birss will explain how the concept...

RNIDS gives away Etar RNIDS typeface ‑ download free of charge

To celebrate eleven years since the launch of .СРБ domain registrations, RNIDS held an event to present a new Serbian Cyrillic font, Etar RNIDS, and facilitate debate on the topic of the Serbian language and artificial intelligence. Speaking on the topic of the Etar RNIDS typeface, which can be downloaded free of charge from the RNIDS website, was its author, Petar Štošić. The author explained that four fonts are available, two normal and two italic, each provided in two weights, more than sufficient both for word processing and for more demanding design applications, both on the web and for print. He explained that he had created them with the idea for them to be embodied in diverse types of design. “Typographically the script is of the grotesque sans serif type, the best‑known example of which is Helvetica. However, unlike Helvetica this typeface has been significantly influenced by calligraphy.” The Etar RNIDS font can be downloaded free of charge from here. Slobodan Marković, a UN Development Programme digital technology advisor, talked about the COMtext project ‑ an initiative to develop open NLP/NLU (natural language processing and understanding) resources and tools for the Serbian language. He noted that language processing using artificial intelligence was now standard in the...

Danko Jevtović, member of the Serbian National Internet Domain Name Registry Foundation (RNIDS) Board of Governors, was elected as Vice‑Chair of the Board of Directors of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) during the conference of this organisation held recently in Malaysia. “My election as Vice‑Chair of the Board of Directors is a recognition of my work thus far in ICANN, but also entails a great responsibility towards the global Internet community. In the coming period, ICANN will focus on the implementation of major projects set in motion both before and after the pandemic, such as further expansion of top‑level Internet domains, the programme of donations from the fund set up through the auction of domains, and the creation of a global system for access to registrant data,” said Jevtović, for whom this is a second term on the ICANN Board of Directors. He was first elected as a member of the Board of Directors of ICANN in 2018, and then re‑elected for a three‑year term in 2021. From 2007 to 2009 he was a member of the RNIDS Board of Governors, and served as the Director of the RNIDS Foundation from 2013 to 2017. In addition to his involvement...

ICANN 75: RNIDS Director chairs session on the role of the ccNSO in regard to Universal Acceptance

What is the role of the ccNSO in relation to Universal Acceptance and should this ICANN body become more actively involved in the discussion? This was the topic of a session chaired by Dejan Đukić, Director of the Serbian National Internet Domain Registry Foundation (RNIDS), during the ICANN 75 annual general meeting. Another of the panelists was Dušan Stojičević, member of the RNIDS Board of Governors, representing the company Gransy, with Žarko Kecić, RNIDS Chief Technical Officer also taking part from the audience. Dejan Đukić has for some years been actively involved in the work of the ccNSO (Country Code Names Supporting Organization), an ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) body, and during ICANN 75 took on the responsibility of chairing the panel tasked with learning what the community, and in particular ccTLDs (country code top‑level domains), expect of the ccNSO in terms of the assistance this body can provide to national registries relating to Universal Acceptance. This session resulted from an initiative on the part of ccTLDs and the broader community under the ICANN umbrella, for the ccNSO to take on a more active role, especially in encouraging ccTLDs to get involved in local and regional initiatives, which are of...

ICANN generation panels: RNIDS experts contribute to a multilingual Internet

Multilingualism on the Internet has long been more than just an enthusiast’s dream ‑ it’s a process which has been ongoing for more than a decade. This process has borne fruit in the form of internationalised domain names such as not only the Serbian .срб domain but also .rs domain names that can be registered using the expanded range of Latin characters used in the languages of ethnic minorities living in Serbia. But in order for all the world’s languages and corresponding scripts to be used in top‑level domains (TLDs) in a standardised and consistent way, beginning in 2014 at the initiative of ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), voluntary working groups (Generation Panels) were formed, tasked with drawing up technical and lexical documents based on which rules would be devised for using a particular script for top‑level domains. Taking part in this extremely important work, and in the long‑term, committed operation of two such panels, were experts from the Serbian National Internet Domain Name Registry (RNIDS): Mirjana Tasić, advisor to RNIDS and Dušan Stojičević, currently a member of the RNIDS Board of Governors. ICANN’s view has been that to ensure the global accessibility of the Internet, it is not enough...

DIDS Conference held: be smarter than your smart devices

The Serbian Internet Domains Day (DIDS) was held on 16th March in a hybrid format, organised by the Serbian National Internet Domain Registry (RNIDS) Foundation. The programme was streamed from the Yugoslav Film Archive, with most of the audience attending online. The conference was opened by Milan Dobrijević, State Secretary in the Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications, who stressed that the Ministry saw Internet access as a basic human right and that the pandemic had shown that the Internet was truly an essential service in the exercise of those rights. He noted that 98% of homes in Serbia had access to 4G mobile Internet and around 70% had high‑speed Internet access but that there was still a need to further extend accessibility in view of the fact that 10‑12% of homes still had no access to fixed‑line broadband Internet. Leonid Todorov, Director of the Asia Pacific Top Level Domain Association (APTLD), also said a few words ‑ about how his organisation operated, about the growth in the number of registered national domains in the markets covered by these registries, and also about their total share of the market in comparison with generic domains. The conference slogan was New Priorities, and Director of the RNIDS Foundation,...

DIDS conference to be held on March 16th under slogan „New priorities“

The Serbian National Internet Domain Name Registry Foundation (RNIDS) is continuing its tradition of organising one of the most influential local conferences on the subject of the Internet ‑ DIDS (Serbian Internet Domains Day), in compliance with the restrictions imposed by the pandemic. This year’s DIDS has been scheduled for 16th March, starting at 10 am. Participation at the conference is free of charge, but to access the content you need to register on dids.rs. The pandemic has given impetus to and accelerated trends which had previously been changing the shape of digital commerce only gradually, and is now setting a rapidly increased pace for difficult and far‑reaching transformation. Over the last two years, numerous questions have come under the spotlight that were previously only hovering on the sidelines ‑ from reliance of businesses on the services of the digital giants to the privacy and protection of user data. Through talks from and discussions with carefully selected local and foreign experts, DIDS will thus be looking at which areas of business have taken on new dimensions and forms, as well as how and to what extent the use of Internet in business ‑ as we know it ‑ has been transformed.
