The importance of having your own domain name in e‑commerce

“e‑Commerce ‑ a chance you should not miss” was the name of an online conference held 3rd December, organised by the USAID Cooperation for Growth Project, in cooperation with the Belgrade Chamber of Commerce, the E‑Commerce Association of Serbia and the Serbian Chamber of Commerce Association of Electronic Communications and Information Society. The seminar was primarily aimed at people from micro‑enterprises for whom online commerce via the Internet is an opportunity both to grow and to survive. It brought together prominent experts in the field of e‑commerce, and one of the talks was delivered by Predrag Milićević, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer of the Serbian National Internet Domain Name Registry Foundation (RNIDS). Milićević noted that the pandemic had forced many business people to move into the Internet environment in order to continue doing business, and had steered them towards the seemingly quickest and simplest solutions, which meant the social networks had taken priority of place. However, he stressed, basing one’s online business solely on the social networks brought many dangers with it ‑ the e‑seller ran the risk of losing their e‑store and thus their customers and their entire business if the network ever shut them down ‑ which could often happen for reasons unclear. He said that for...

Digital revolution 4.0 ‑ from the legal standpoint

The second conference to be organised jointly by the Serbian National Internet Domain Name Registry Foundation (RNIDS) and Union University Faculty of Law was held online 3rd December under the slogan “Digital Revolution 4.0: through theory and practice”. The conference was opened by Prof. Nebojša Šarkić, PhD, Dean of the Union University Faculty of Law, who gave an introduction to the topic of the event ‑ the connection between law, information technologies and new and contemporary solutions. He referred to the fact that the introduction of new solutions brought with it certain difficulties from the legal and other aspects. The conference would therefore try to throw light on these difficulties and issues both from the theoretical and the practical standpoint. Dejan Đukić, director of the RNIDS Foundation, spoke on a very current topic, that of the position of domain registries with respect to illegal content online. He stressed the significance of this subject given that illegal content on the Internet was expanding as the Internet itself grew at an incredible rate. The audience got to hear about an important set of regulations that were being worked on at the European level ‑ the DSA (Digital Service Act) ‑ whereby the law would seek to place responsibility for online content...

He explained the importance of encryption, not just for the security of information travelling across the Internet but also for its secure storage in the cloud. DNSSEC‑protected .rs and .срб domains

Someone malicious, given the opportunity to intercept communication with a DNS server or to alter the DNS response by some other means, can redirect users to a completely different location on the Internet. Theft of personal data, bank account and credit card numbers or confidential business data, can often be disastrous both for users and for those whose Internet service has been hijacked. Recently RNIDS has made it possible to protect all domain names in the .rs and .срб domain space from fake DNS responses. DNSSEC allows the authenticity of the source from which the DNS response was received to be validated, as well as the integrity of the response itself. In practice this means that all those using DNS servers with active DNSSEC record validation can be safe in the knowledge that the DNS response for DNSSEC‑signed domains has not been altered en route from the server to the user. Since these changes to the domain name registration system were put in place, several dozen .rs domains have been protected with DNSSEC signatures. Our common goal is to ensure the most secure Internet environment possible, and that includes the security of domain names and the DNS system. That is why we strongly...

DIDS 2020 and silent Internet revolutions

On the 19th March the Serbian National Internet Domain Registry (RNIDS) Foundation will organize its eleventh annual conference Serbian Internet Domains Day (DIDS) ‑ DIDS 2020, under the slogan „Silent Internet revolutions“. There are ten DIDS conferences behind us now ‑ ten great tales of the Internet. Year by year, DIDS has chronicled silent Internet revolutions. The eleventh DIDS is set to kick off a new decade ‑ of asking important questions and of seeking to identify where we are today, of remembering where we came from and everything that has happened along the way. Like in the previous years many national and international experts will participate and speak at the conference. DIDS 2020 asks: in seeking to provide Internet users with the privacy they sorely need, is their security being sacrificed? Do new protocols which ensure the privacy of access to online destinations at the same time compromise the basic structure of the Internet, and how does that impact the experience of end‑users? In leaving it up to the tech giants to take care of our online privacy will we end up seeing the Internet solely through their eyes? Through a presentation of the results of recently conducted market research, DIDS 2020 will give an insight into the way Serbian...

Getting Offline to Promote the Online ‑ RNIDS H1 2019 Education Activities

The EU Commission’s DESI index shows that Serbia, a non‑EU country, significantly topped the bottom four EU countries in 2018 in some relevant aspects of digital. This included parameters such as integration of digital technology by business and digital public services (e‑governance). Active internet users and digital services consumers might readily accept that the country is well ahead in digitalization, however, it is still significantly below the EU average. Furthermore, market research ordered by RNIDS showed that less than two years ago 46% of Serbian businesses were not presented online. Not in any form. These companies had no website, did not manage social media pages, and many were even unmentioned in online business repositories like Yellow Pages. Most “offline” businesses are micro and small ones, those which can benefit the most from an online presence. RNIDS (the Serbian National Internet Domain Registry) believes in the power of the internet and its essential importance for boosting the growth of small businesses and in providing a helping hand to those taking baby steps towards increased market penetration using the assets that the internet provides. But the Registry also stands for safe, appropriate and legal use of the internet and reaches out in order to offer...
