Find me easy ‑ with Google, at DIDS 2017

This year’s DIDS 2017, organised by RNIDS on 7th March at the Metropol Palace Hotel in Belgrade, will try to shed light on the machinery we know as the Internet search engine, which many equate with Google. The second block, of this, the largest free‑entry Internet conference in this country, titled Find me Easy, brings together local and regional experts in Google advertising, content creation and results analysis using Google’s tools. The introductory talk will be by Lazar Džamić, who until recently was head of Google’s ZOO team for brand strategy in London. His talk, titled “How to get found in a world in which you are easily ignored”, will address the different aspects of how the “search machine” should be fed with content. Following on is a panel discussion on the “search machine”  ‑ omnipresent, involved in every aspect of our lives, it is by no means a stranger to us. But what we are interested in is how that machine functions and how it affects our stories and our lives. If the “machine” is not a stranger to us (if we take the right attitude towards it) then how can we affect the way it works and how can we interpret the information we get from it? How can we talk to the machine in a...

From Google’s Angle at DIDS 2017

The eighth conference on the Internet in Serbia ‑  DIDS 2017  ‑ will be held on 7th and 8th March at the Metropol Palace Hotel in Belgrade, organised by RNIDS. The motto of this year’s DIDS, Internet Search Secrets: Search, Find, Visit, also describes the three themed blocks and overall topic of the event: the Internet search machinery personified in Google. Thus the first DIDS block is titled From Google’s Angle, with opening speaker Gary Illyes, webmaster trends analyst with Google Inc. His mission is to help website owners create successful sites and provide users with the highest quality search experience. Gary is always on the lookout for ways to improve web search; he represents Google in the global online marketing community, regularly writes for the Google Webmaster Central blog, and also helps users in the Google Webmaster Forums resolve problems with their web sites. The title of Gary’s talk is Google and internationalisation, in which he gives a deeper look into Google’s internationalisation and geotargetting algorithms, what effects they have on users and how we can influence them. Visitors to DIDS will have a chance to learn first‑hand how to use Google’s tools in creating an Internet strategy, and to put questions directly to someone who is at the very source of information about Google. Registration for the Conference is closed and...

Notification of security incident at registrar Ninet

RNIDS would like to notify users of Serbian national domains and members of the public that on 5th February 2017, between 01:49 and 04:35 hours CET there was a security incident involving the registrar Ninet. During this incident, unauthorised access was gained to Ninet’s systems, following which a large number of unauthorised requests for changes to domain name details were sent via the EPP protocol. A total of 924 national domains were affected by this incident. The unauthorised requests consisted only of changes to the NS records for the affected domains, that is, the domains were redirected to new addresses. These changes gradually became visible on the Internet as the zone file was automatically updated, at 02:00, 04:00 and 06:00 CET, 5th February. During the incident, attempts to change the same data for a further 126 national domains were logged, but these attempts were unsuccessful as the domains concerned were in Locked status. Ninet became aware of the unauthorised access on 5th February morning, when they noticed an unusually large number of notification of changes to domain data, which RNIDS’ system had automatically generated and sent to the email addresses of Ninet’s admins. Ninet immediately set about reverting the NS records for the affected domains...

Cyribusters 2 dispels excuses for not using Cyrillic script

Use of the Cyrillic script in everyday communication ‑ and therefore online too ‑ is not, as some would have it, a nationalist statement, it is a sign of respect for one’s language, just as nations all around the world value their identity. This sentence summarises the Cyribusters 2 panel debate held 27th January at the Startit Center in Belgrade and organised by the Serbian National Internet Domain Registry (RNIDS). The panel was held to mark the fifth anniversary of the Cyrillic .СРБ domain and was moderated by Aleksandar Gajšek, author and presenter of the Agape programme on Studio B television. Participants in the debate were Thiago Ferreira, marketing director of the Serbia4Youth organisation, Uroš Nedeljković, attorney and traveller, Vlado Đukanović, linguist, and Dušan Stojičević, chair of the Cyrillic Generation Panel at ICANN. They looked at the five most common excuses for non‑use of the Cyrillic alphabet, which were in addition to the list of false myths about the use of the Serbian national script, addressed on the same day a year ago at the first Cyribusters event. Excuse no. 1: “It’s easier for me to type ‘shorn’ Latin script” Thiago Ferreira is a Brazilian who came to Serbia for love five years ago. In that time he...

RNIDS provides for reliable protection of domain names

A serious form of cyber‑crime prevalent today is one in which criminals take over control of domain names or change their registration data. This results in online services becoming unavailable or in users being redirected to services controlled by the attacker. RNIDS is currently the only top‑level Internet domain registry offering three levels of domain name protection, to users of the .RS and .СРБ national domains: Secure Mode, Client‑Side Lock and Registry Lock. All of these options have been implemented in the new RSreg 2.0 domain name registration system, and as of 1st January 2017 have been made available to registrants via RNIDS registrars. The security solutions that have been employed prevent abuse by cyber‑criminals by locking down critical domain operations for protected domain names. Registrants who are interested in activating this protection for their domain name ‑ and hence for their Internet identity ‑ should contact their registrar. A list of these is available at www.prod.rnids.beeloc.rs/en/registrars/list‑accredited‑registrars. How to protect your internet domain It is more and more common to hear reports of “domain hijacking”, otherwise known as domain theft. This crime can seriously affect the online presence of a company or individual. These attacks, whereby the attacker takes over control of a domain or changes its registration data,...

RNIDS becomes a member of the international RIPE NCC organisation

The Serbian National Internet Domain Name Registry Foundation (RNIDS) has taken a corporate decision to join the RIPE NCC organisation, which manages numerical Internet resources for Eurasia and the Middle East. This decision was taken at the first online session of the Conference of Co‑founders, held from 8th to 13th September 2016. RIPE NCC (Réseaux IP Européens Network Coordination Centre) coordinates the forum of European IP networks, and is one of five global regional Internet registries (RIRs), responsible for the territory of Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia. The members of the organisation are local Internet registries to whom RIPE allots the IP addresses and AS numbers which are essential for the functioning of the Internet. In 2015, RNIDS hosted SEE4 RIPE NCC ‑  the regional meeting of network engineers for Southeast Europe, and RIPE NCC has sponsored the Conference of the Republic of Serbia Network Operators’ Group  (RSNOG) and SEEDIG 2016  ‑ a meeting on the topic of Internet governance in South Eastern Europe. By joining this organisation RNIDS will be able to unify all the IP resources it currently uses under its own user account. SPAM: A Fool’s Paradise ‑ panel discussion held

How do we deal with our inboxes being overwhelmed with unwanted ads and other messages, not to mention malicious content aimed at stealing our identity, bank details and other personal information? This was the question that participants in the panel discussion titled SPAM: A Fool’s Paradise (“Spamovanje ludom radovanje“), organised by the Serbian National Internet Domain Registry Foundation (RNIDS) as part of events to mark European Cyber Security Month, set out to answer. The debate was co‑organised by the Museum of Science and Technology which was also the venue for the event, on 20th October 2016.  Moderator Jelena Ožegović, RNIDS Marketing and Communications Associate, opening the discussion, gave a short introduction to the topic, defining spam mass‑messaging that is unsolicited, regardless of its content. In other words, any message sent to its recipients without their consent is considered spam. In Serbia, despite no less than four different laws prohibiting this business practice, some companies and organisations continue to pester the public with unsolicited material placed in their postboxes, unwanted messages sent by email or SMS and unwanted land or mobile phone calls. It is public knowledge that the personal data of citizens is sold to companies for them to use in targeting potential...
