The rate of digitalisation and its future direction, and the numerous benefits and challenges placed before companies and individuals by the processes of digital transformation, were the topics of discussion during the DIDS 2019 conference. The tenth anniversary edition of Serbian Internet Domains Day (DIDS) was held on 5th March in the conference hall of the Belgrade Metropol Palace Hotel, organised by the Serbian National Internet Domain Registry (RNIDS) Foundation. Almost 350 attendees, as well as many watching the online stream, were able to hear first‑hand about various aspects of the processes that are changing our lives, our leisure and our business, and which are encompassed by the term “digital transformation”.  The tenth DIDS was officially opened by Vladimir Manić, Director of RNIDS: “Digital transformation has become an inescapable fact of our everyday lives. It is present in business, and in the state and private sectors, and the Internet is one of the key factors in this transformation. .RS domain worth more as of 10th December

There is a saying in Serbian that “You are worth the number of languages you speak”. As of 10th December our .RS domain will “speak” no less than 13 languages, supporting the specific letters of their official scripts. In addition to Serbian letters, .RS domain names will support characters from the Albanian, Bosnian, Croatian, Czech, German, Hungarian, Montenegrin, Romanian, Romany, Slovak, Slovene and Vlach languages. In doing so our .RS domain joins the great global family of IDN domains, which currently comprise around 7.5 million registered IDNs. Domain names comprising any letter not contained within the English alphabet (i.e. in the ASCII character set) are referred to as IDNs (Internationalised Domain Names), and the initial registration period for IDNs will begin within the .RS domain on 10/12/2018 at 12 noon. There is a global commitment to multilinguality on the Internet. The concept of IDNs first emerged online in 1996, and in 2000 registration of IDNs was enabled within the .COM and .NET domains. Only a year later, ccTLDs began registrations of IDNs, among the first of which was the Japanese .JP domain. In 2003, ICANN, the organisation that manages the global structure of the Internet, approved the IDN standard, and the same year,...

Intellectual Property and the Internet conference 2018

The Belgrade Faculty of Law and the Serbian National Internet Domain Registry Foundation (RNIDS) organised the fourth Intellectual Property and the Internet conference on 11th June 2018. This year the discussion was of numerous current topics concerning copyright, domain names, online content and new technologies. “We have all become Internet addicts, and we are becoming increasingly careless in the way we use it. That is why the protection of subjective rights relating to the use of intellectual assets on the Internet is an area deserving of special attention,” said acting Dean of the Faculty of Law Prof Dr Vladan Petrov. Chair of the RNIDS Board Vojislav Rodić noted that 2018 was a very significant year for RNIDS. “We are marking ten years since the launch of the .rs domain, and not long ago the one‑hundred‑thousandth .rs domain was registered. This is a reminder to us of how much of our activity is conducted on the Internet, and raises the need for new rules to protect us in our virtual interactions.” Domain names are of great importance in today’s business world, but in practice they have often become the subject of dispute. Full professor of the Faculty of Law and chair of the Committee for the resolution of...

The 100,000th .RS domain UTS Balkan Tools: tools for professionals and hobbyists

Exactly 3686 days after the registration of the first .RS domain name, the 100,000th was registered on 13th April 2018. It was the domain utsbalkantools.rs, and here is the story of the company behind it. UTS Balkan Tools is a young, part‑Serbian, part‑Italian‑owned company in Belgrade which began operating in February 2018. The core business of this company is distribution of cutting tools, hand tools, machines and tools for the mechanical engineering industry, as well as top quality tools for the hobbyist. There are three people behind the company, Alessandro Favaretto, Ana Drobnjak and Silvano Vitiello, who have joined forces to bring innovations from the West to the Serbian market that will help develop the business of local companies. How did the idea come about to open UTS Balkan Tools in Serbia specifically? Ana Drobnjak: The original idea to establish UTS Balkan Tools came from the chief investor and director of the company, Italian Alessandro Favaretto. He had been doing business supplying cutting tools in Italy for more than 10 years. He happened to meet some people from our region and, two years ago, came to Serbia and visited Belgrade, which he took a great liking to. Here he found what he called “fertile soil”....

100,000 .RS domain names registered

In the year that RNIDS marks the 10th anniversary of .RS domain, Friday 13th, saw the registration of the one hundred thousandth .RS domain name. Registrations of .RS domain names began officially on 10th March 2008 at midday, simultaneously via 27 companies that were accredited to provide registration services. That first day, 7,000 domain names were registered. In the following six months, up to 10th September 2008, owners of the old .YU domain names had right of first refusal for registration of equivalent names with the .RS suffix, an opportunity taken for 19,372 domains. In the meantime the .RS domain grew both numerically and in terms of quality. The infrastructure was upgraded and new registration software was created. It is the only TLD with three types of protection and has enjoyed 100% uptime since its launch until the present day, making it one of only seven world domain names to have zero downtime in the last ten years. Today .RS domain names can be registered by any legal entity or individual, foreign or domestic, quickly, easily and in unlimited numbers, via one of the 44 RNIDS accredited registrars, which has brought us to the round figure of 100,000 domain names.  READ MORE: a detailed history of the .RS domain.       #s3gt_translate_tooltip_mini { display:...
