RNIDS presents the Lingva RNIDS typeface

To mark 10 years since registrations began in the Cyrillic .срб domain, the Serbian National Internet Domain Name Registry Foundation (RNIDS) has gifted another Serbian Cyrillic typeface, designed primarily for screen/online use. Lingva RNIDS is a serif typeface comprising four fonts which, although they look great on‑screen, can equally be used in printed materials. The RNIDS Lingva typeface is available to download, free of charge, from the RNIDS website. This is the third typeface gifted by RNIDS and created in partnership with Tipometar. Previous to this, the fonts Areal RNIDS and Orto RNIDS were made available to download for free from the прод.рнидс.итцентар.срб website. Cyrillic in the Eye of the Beholder The new typeface was revealed at the Cyrillic in the Eye of the Beholder event, streamed publicly online. Petar Vasilić, author of the typeface, talked about RNIDS’ partnership with Tipometar, which has resulted in the third typeface to be given away by RNIDS. He said that he had been working on the font since back when he was preparing his Master thesis. He emphasised the importance of creating fonts for Serbian Cyrillic since free fonts (largely Google’s) that support Cyrillic mostly comprise Russian italic forms. In creating the typeface for screen display, individual “font hinting”...

The Seventh RSNOG Conference ‑ for a safer, faster, more stable Internet

As in previous years, the seventh RSNOG Conference brought together a great number of local and foreign experts, albeit online. Via the stream, the audience had a chance to hear numerous talks on making the Internet services we use every day ‑ and the Internet as a whole ‑ as reliable, fast and secure as possible. The conference was organised by the Serbian Network Operators Group (RSNOG) with the support of the Serbian National Internet Domain Name Registry Foundation (RNIDS). The conference was opened by Dejan Đukić, Director of the RNIDS Foundation, who said that there were plans to offer new programmes to the community that comes together under the RSNOG umbrella, and to improve capacities for exchange and communication. He said that there were numerous online conferences being organised in the current circumstances but that regardless of the industry they were targeted towards and the content they were offering, quality speakers and topics were key to drawing in and retaining audiences. Mihailo Jovanović, Director of the Serbian government Office for IT and eGovernance noted that the public was getting quickly and easily accustomed to electronic services and online communication, as evidenced by the increase in the number of users of the various services offered by the...

Seventh RSNOG conference, 30th November, online

For the seventh time the Serbian National Internet Domain Name Registry Foundation (RNIDS) supports the realisation of RSNOG conference, organised by the RS Network Operators’ Group. Save the date ‑ 30th November for RSNOG conference and follow along online via the stream. When Facebook, and the other services owned by the same company, ‘disappeared off the face of the Internet’ for almost six hours in early October, depriving almost 3.5 billion users worldwide of service, it was no small concern for all those whose businesses depended on presenting and promoting their products and services on this social network. This episode reminded many of the need for a back‑up plan for those situations when the platform of a particular provider of business services (be they messaging, advertising, promotional or some other) becomes inaccessible for any reason. The aforementioned incident will serve as a useful occasion for operators and IT companies developing Internet services to discuss the topics of network performance measurement and fast failover at the forthcoming RSNOG conference. In recent years, the demands and expectations of users have fundamentally changed, and consequently these topics are becoming increasingly important. Some 20 or 30 years ago when services such as DNS and BGP were developed, on which the...

The jury of the online WHOIS Hackathon, organised last weekend (25th and 26th September) by the Serbian National Internet Domain Name Registry Foundation (RNIDS) and Quantox Technology, was faced with no small task ‑ to choose the winner of the hackathon from amongst stiff competition.  Redtech Zemare took first place ‑ a team comprising programmers Milan Cupać, Željko Lučić, Igor Stevanović, Andrija Jelenković and Damjan Denić. As the jury ‑ comprising Petar Slović, director of innovations of Quantox Technology, Damjan Tomić, technical director of IT Biz Solutions, and Dušan Stojičević, Gransy, fomer vice‑Chair of the Universal Acceptance Group (UASG) ‑ emphasised multiple times as they were presenting the hackathon solutions on 27th September, there was very little to separate the winners. All ten of the teams selected for the competition delivered fully functional mobile phone apps providing WHOIS and DNS data on available and registered domain names (both Cyrillic and Latin) in the given domain spaces. Many teams went a step further, including additional TLDs and more data (e.g. the postal code of...

Regional TLD Forum 2021

The second day of the DIDS 2021 conference was devoted to the Regional TLD Forum. This event has been held as a side event to DIDS since 2015, and was held online this year for the first time. This year the event brought together 23 representatives from the national registries of Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro and Serbia. It was held in a round‑table format, at which representatives of national registries were able to share information and experiences in the areas of technology, law and marketing. First the representatives of RNIDS, as the host of the event, presented their work on establishing a regional Anycast service, which they are working on with their colleagues from the Slovenian registry. There was also discussion of upgrading hardware infrastructure and working on bringing rulebooks up to date. The marketing representative presented the idea of the pitajte.rs project and the infographic as a mural, as well as interesting traffic statistics for the domen.rs site. The Montenegrin registry has received a boost to its staffing and initiated some new projects. One of them is drop catching ‑ they have introduced what is known as a drop zone, which is a one‑hour window in which all their accredited registrars can access and register...

DIDS 2021 Digital ‑ praise in the chat instead of applause in the room

For the first time since 2010, when the Serbian National Internet Domain Name Registry Foundation (RNIDS) began organising DIDS (Serbian Internet Domains Day), this conference was held completely online. Its slogan, “Servant. Master. Internet.” was meant to summarise the central topic in three words: the role of the Internet in our lives and businesses over the last year. From the first case of coronavirus in Serbia until today a significant portion of the economy has been experiencing a slowdown, but there have also been areas in which surprising growth has been seen, such as in e‑commerce and delivery services. The speakers and participants of the panel debates at DIDS shared data on current and expected trends, and also gave some specific advice on how to optimise web stores and improve communication with clients. Evidence of the “new normal” we have been hearing about for months could be seen in the fact that speakers got praise in the chat window on the conference website instead of applause. Viewers’ comments were permeated with a sense of nostalgia for the personal contact, face‑to‑face conversation and socialising that DIDS attendees have become accustomed to, but they also had words of praise for the digital version,...

Welcome to DIDS 2021 Digital

One of the best‑known conferences devoted to the Internet, organised since 2010 by the Serbian National Internet Domain Name Registry (RNIDS), will for the first time be held entirely online. The slogan for this year’s DIDS conference is meant to summarise the role of the Internet over the preceding year in three words: “Servant. Master. Internet.” Join us live on 17th March, starting at 10 a.m. at dids.rs, when with the help of first‑rate speakers and panel participants we will examine whether the economy could have had any better servant than the Internet during the pandemic, but also ask ourselves whether the Internet has irreversibly imposed its rule over practically all aspects of our lives. A year after the first lockdown was imposed in Serbia in the face of the pandemic that has held the whole world in its grip and almost brought it to a halt, we talk about the Internet ‑ the thing that has made it possible to keep things moving despite everything, whether that be the content that for some has been their only company in times of isolation, or the goods and services that have kept many businesses around the world above water. It has been at the service...

A gift from RNIDS ‑ new Cyrillic fonts Orto RNIDS

Orto RNIDS is a new Cyrillic typeface created primarily for on‑screen display, a gift from the Serbian National Internet Domain Name Registry Foundation (RNIDS) to Internet users, which can be downloaded for free from our site, rnids.rs. This is the second Cyrillic typeface that RNIDS has supported the creation of, in partnership with the organisation Tipometar. The new fonts are being made available to mark the ninth anniversary of the beginning of registrations of Cyrillic .срб domains. Unlike the Areal RNIDS typeface, presented in January 2020, which is a slab serif typeface, Orto RNIDS is in a sans serif humanist style. Within the typeface there are upright and italic fonts, each in two weights. It was created with the idea that the shapes of the characters would be well suited to on‑screen display but perform well in print, too. The author of the Orto RNIDS typeface is Ana Prodanović, assistant professor at the Belgrade Faculty of Applied Arts. The new typeface was presented at an online event called Cyrillic in the Digital World, with its author, Ana Prodanović, giving a talk about the process of creating fonts, where the inspiration for them comes from and their everyday usage. Following this the audience had...
